Agandi (Hello) and welcome to my blog,
My name is Julia and I am an incoming fourth year at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). I was recently given the opportunity to do an internship abroad under a Child Family Health International (CFHI) Scholarship. I will be posting about my life in Uganda, what medical lessons I have learned, and what to prepare for when traveling abroad. This will be my first time ever going to the African Continent and I am very excited and nervous. Depending on the internet I will try to blog at least a few times a week. If not, I will be sharing updates once I secure strong Wi-Fi. I like to journal anyway and will keep you all updated on my adventures.
I am currently a Global Health major and plan to go into midwifery after college. My interests in school include cultural competency, epidemiology, and HIV/AIDS. I recently finished up research with Professor Dredge Kang at UCSD regarding HIV in college students. My primary goals for this trip are to:
- Note the differences in HIV/AIDS care in Uganda Vs. the United States.
- Observe birth settings in Uganda and if possible assist on a rural birth.
- Learn about the community during outreaches.
Something I will keep in check during this trip is my privilege. I am honored that CFHI has awarded me with a scholarship to help cover some of the tuition expenses. I would like to thank all my professors at school for encouraging me to apply to this program.
